Science, Applied

Notes from the Bench

Small bits of skin science, soap chemistry, and what the lab taught us.
Did you know?Natural doesn’t mean allergy-free.
Plants, essential oils, fragrance materials, and other naturally derived ingredients can still cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people. “Natural” describes where something comes from—not whether every person will tolerate it. Skin is individual, so spot test a new product first, especially if you know you’re sensitive.
Soap chemistryYes, real cold-process soap starts with lye.
Cold-process soap is made by combining fats and oils with sodium hydroxide (lye). During saponification, the alkali reacts with the fatty acids to form soap and glycerin. In a properly formulated and fully cured bar, the lye has been used in that chemical reaction rather than remaining as free lye. That chemistry is what turns oils into true soap.
Behind Red OakWhat does Medical Laboratory Scientist mean?
A Medical Laboratory Scientist is trained to perform and interpret complex laboratory testing used in patient care—working with microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and other areas of laboratory medicine. At Red Oak, that background shapes how we think: measure carefully, understand ingredients, respect chemistry, document what we do, and never confuse a pretty label with good science.
